Women In Politics Who Inspire You

A forum for the respectful exchange of views on thought-provoking topics, whether sexuality-related or otherwise; please read the guidelines prior to posting.

Forum rules

Welcome to the Intellectual Discussion subforum.

This forum is the place for intellectual discussions, such as philosophical or scientific debates. There are some guidelines that apply specifically to posts in this forum, of which you will be expected to have made yourself aware before participating. They are as follows:

  • Intellectually stimulating topics only. If you can't have a deep discussion about something, it does not belong here.
  • If you're going to post, have something to say. When you make a new thread, write the initial post in a way that provides an introduction to the topic and invites further discussion. You could tell us how you feel and why, but always aim for constructive responses that further a discussion about the ideas involved, rather than a simple list of people's views. (Instead of asking "Are you a vegetarian?", discuss some of the arguments involved.) This guideline likewise applies for responses to topics.
  • Write using good English. That means full sentences with proper capitalisation, punctuation, spelling and grammar. No one is perfect, though; this is not an invitation to criticise others for minor mistakes.
  • Be nice. This is a forum for rational discourse, not flame wars. No one is always right. Be respectful of other people's views and accept that we are all entitled to our own.

These guidelines will be enforced by the moderators based on their best judgement, and anyone who does not take them seriously will lose the privilege of posting here. Spammers will be banned from the entire forum.

I'd call you silly for thinking she'd win, but then I remembered Trump and Brexit.

Weird that no one's mentioned the US's most successful and inspirational female politician to date.

Trailblazer First Lady, so strong that the Republicans took the unusual step of launching a 25-year smear campaign

Well-respected New York Senator on 9/11.

PENNY WONG

Image
She is an Australian Senator who represents South Australia and is the Commonwealth Minister for Finance and Deregulation.

She is a member of the Australian Labor Party and member of the Australian federal cabinet.

She is the first Asian-born federal minister.

She is the first openly lesbian member of the Australian cabinet.

When she was 18, she took over the control of the Adelaide University Labor Club.

While at university, she became involved in political activism at university, winning a position on the National Executive of the National Union of Students.

In 2010, Wong was selected by readers of samesame.com.au as one of the 25 most influential lesbian Australians.

In 2011 she was subject to sexist catcalling in parliament, to which she responded firmly and with dignity (which you can see here).

Her and her partner Sophie Allouache have a beautiful child together, Alexandra Wong (you can see Penny talk about her family, and marriage equality here).

You can go to her website to see media releases, speech transcripts, media interviews and read opinion pieces that she has written.

I don't know if it counts but I am quite fond of Frida Kahlo. Not as a politician or something but I always liked her perception of life and that inspired me a lot.

I particularly like Christianne Taubira, who is a french politician and fights for equality.
She created the law which is called "Taubira law" and has for a goal to recognize slavery as a crime against humanity.
She alsocreated the law which allows the gay wedding and she still fights for the rights of homosexuals which does exist for straight but not for gay people or couples.
She's often the target of racists or sexists insults but has the power to ignore them or answer as good as Churchill would have done.
She talks very wisely and sometimes what she says really sounds like poetry...
She was Justice minister in the governement but didn't stayed. She prefered to leave because the political way that followed the governement was not socialist anymore.
She also is one of the only politics in this country who isn't completely mad of power, she prefers to defend real ideas, which are more realistic and profitable for the people.

and don't talk to me about Le Pen...

Was my english good? I'm in a french german section so I may have doubts about it..;

Dr. Jocelyn Elders- 15th Surgeon General of the United States
Image
As Surgeon General of the United States she advocated for sensible but unpopular policies pertaining to drug use, unprotected sex, and etc.. She was eventually dismissed by the Clinton administration for holding and attempting to popularize her stances.

Frances Perkins- 4th United States Secretary of Labor
Image
Perkins was known most for being the first female member of the Cabinet in US History and for assisting FDR's implementation of New Deal policies.

Barbara Jordan-Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas's 18th district (1973-1979)
Image
Barbara Jordan was the first southern African-American woman elected the House of Representatives. She is most remembered for her eloquent speeches, her most famous ones being her opening statements during the Nixon Impeachment Hearings and her 1976 Democratic National Convention Keynote Address.

Kathryn D. Sullivan
Image
Kathryn Sullivan was the former NOAA Administrator and Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere. Before accepting her position at the Department of Commerce she was a NASA astronaut and was known for being the first American woman to walk in space. She's inspiring to mainly because she's a female that wasn't afraid to pursue a STEM doctorate, travel to space, or serve in a political position for an agency that many would like to see done away with.
