GTF MAFIA: Introduction and Rota

What is Mafia?

Mafia is a text-based game where players are secretly assigned to either the Civilian team, or the Mafia team. The Civilians are unaware of who is Civilian or Mafia, whilst the Mafia team are put into a group chat on somewhedemre like Skype or Facebook.

The aim of the game is to uncover and lynch the Mafia members before they've killed enough civilians to make the number of Mafia members equal to that of the Civilians.

The game is split into 36-hour Day Phases, where everyone discusses evidence and decides who they wish to "lynch", based on who they believe is Mafia. Lynching may be called different things depending on the game, but the idea is the same - the player with the most votes at the end of the Day Phase is eliminated.

After Day, there is a Night Phase which lasts 12 hours. During this time, the Mafia submit to the Game Master who they wish to kill, and other players with abilities decide how they wish to use them. For example, the Protector chooses who they wish to protect, and the Detective chooses who they wish to investigate.

If you want to know more, this is a useful website.

If you're thinking it's similar to Town of Salem, then this can help you.

When is the next Mafia game?

Cobalt will be running a Final Fantasy XII themed mafia game beginning in early June [DELAYED].

If you want to run a Mafia game, just PM me or a moderator and the rota on this thread will be updated so that you can reserve a "slot". :keke:

I think there will be at least one game before mine though.

Also, visit this thread and vote on the upcoming theme if you haven't yet!

This will be useful for new members to read, as well as keeping a rota. Likewise, discussion of future themes and when games should be held should be kept in this thread (after Jan's thread dies, anyway)

Also, you could also use this thread as a bit of an archive if Joe is bothered to keep it up to date. Link every mafia there has been and say whether it was a Mafia or Civilian win, who won player of the game, etc. - Can have a few statistics like who has played the most games and whether the Civilian or Mafia have won more.

I'll sticky it and then move it to the games sub-forum when/if we get it.

I may decide to run one late summer, if no one else would. I haven't actually committed to it yet though.

I have a Religion Mafia prepared and ready to go whenever I feel like it. I also have an idea for a Quentin Tarantino movie themed mafia which I might prepare for fun, again when I feel like it.

Appreciated, Joe. I may actually try getting in on a game sooner or later, if the theme agrees with me

Well, noting your enthusiasm for LOTR Mafia Marshall, I'm thinking a lot more positively about the concept now... :D

This game is basically a play by post roleplay game from sounds of it. Lot more primitive in a way or 2 but neat!

That's fine. If you want, you could PM me it and I'll update the original post with it (credited to you, of course).

Also, rough dates for yours and Roman's All-Stars?

I'm willing to do the League of Legends one, but it is just a proposition. If there would be enough interest I can try to do it, tho I won't promise I'd stick to the deadlines :v Have a lot of ideas (Ionia vs Noxus, Demacia vs Noxus, Ashe vs Sejuani vs Lisandra, Zaun vs Piltover, The Void vs the Living, etc...).

Similar in some area but it's almost a different game entirely.
I can note some key differences for you.

Forum Mafia vs Town of Salem
-We have themes like Marvel, Disney, Game of Thrones and the likes; so it's not just plain old town vs mafia (with third party).

-The Forum Mafia is slowed down dramatically (Day is 36 hours, Night is 12 hours). Games could take a couple weeks to a month at least so if you're playing, please PLEASE make sure there isn't any major events like vacations or Finals that might impede your gameplay. Wallflowering, the lack of posting and game activity, is not really appreciated in this game just like how remaining silent will cast suspicion on you in Town of Salem (ToS, for short).

-Many of the roles are quite different. For example the key detective role usually act more like a Sheriff from ToS. The Doctor/Medic can protect themselves more than once or not at all. And there are alternative of all roles depending on the GM (Game Master). That's said, many of the roles we see in ToS are not introduced into forum Mafias (Medium, Werewolf, Witch and Spy are not typically in).

-Mafia team are in constant communication VIA Skype group text versus ToS night only. Though this is up to the Game Master as one game (Marvel) we had a mafia that didn't know each other at all.

-No Whispering... or in this case no PM.

-Most of the time all the role won't be known but a few times it will be an open-role game.

-The voting to lynch is pretty much the same except you have all day to vote and you MUST make a vote. Votes are usually submitted on the game thread like so: Lynch JudgeDes or No Lynch (It is strongly inadvisable to use the latter under any circumstances.)
Most of mafia rules will DQ you if you miss two votes.
You will need to check the GM posts and rules for clarification on proper lynching format.

-Depending on the GM, not everyone will have a role so you can expect to be a roleless mafia or town.

-With that said, the forum mafia adds an element of analysis, deduction, instinct, etc. We're essentially communicating with each other through posting. As Town/Civs you should be looking through other posts and trying figure out who might be mafia or third party. You can also look at amount of posts/content, forum activity, whatever you need to figure out a mafia. As Mafia you should be carefully role-reading since you want to get rid of the Detective/Medic first and foremost, you should also be blending in with town and making sure no suspicion are cast upon you. As third party, it will depends on your win condition so work toward that goal.

I hope this help explain some things for people looking into playing Forum Mafia from Town of Salem. Town of Salem is fun and have some of the same stuff but the way things are played are pretty different on Forum Mafia then you would be used to.

Btw, my game is a Teen Wolf game and it will take place immediately following all-stars. Sometime around Saturday May 16th. I doubt Roman's game will take over two weeks.

Do you guys have a break planned anywhere? Whilst there is obviously a demand, players will end up getting bored and a burnout will happen if games just keep getting played in an endless cycle. I think that is why a lot of people enjoyed Dom's last game - there was a long break which lead to a lot of demand for it and players were eager to be involved.

Just my two cents.
