PM Safety - Public service announcement

Unread postby thaprot » 30th March, 2016, 9:26 am

Hello all!

On the back of recent discussions, I just wanted to make a quick (and long overdue) post about safety with PM's. Unfortunately, due to the nature of forums, we are not always able to verify the identity of users who sign up and there is no plan to introduce a verification on signup system. As such, we have to be vigilant on forum posts and in chat. By and large we can identify and eliminate users who we believe to either be suspicious or fake and who may have undesirable intentions. However an area that we do not have have the facility to freely monitor is PM's and in this instance we rely on forum users to help us out.

If you receive a PM from a user who is making you uncomfortable or who is asking for personal information (or seem any way dodgy) or you simply cannot verify who they really are then I would implore you to please do not give out any personal information or pictures and report the PM by pressing the exclamation mark Image in the top right hand corner. It is only if you bring it to our attention that we can investigate and see if the user has been abusing the function or attempting to groom other members. It is only with evidence that admin can look into them further.

A lot of you would ignore PM's like that - even if you do so please report them too so we can see if there is a pattern and if they are messaging other users. They may not get a response from you but other users may fall victim to them. If you have received any recently from any users please also notify us of them too.

Thank you!

But yeah - if you get weird PMs always report them. Its always easy to ignore it, but someone else may not ignore it and get themselves in a silly situation. Moderators can't read PMs ever and they're 100% private, except when they're reported.

Don't necessarily think that any particular bad incident brought this on, rather that the influx of discovered fake accounts in recent months as well as some discussions about age limit and protecting younger members sort of spurred this along.
