Best Lyricists

Unread postby Adyuto » 14th July, 2017, 12:14 am

I pay more attention to lyrics than melody when listening to music. I was curious who people would consider to be the best lyricists of all time (or the Modern Era for ease). For me the best lyricists are:
Lauryn Hill
Solange Knowles
Carole King
James Taylor
John Lennon

I'm obsessed with Childish Gambino and a lot of that has to do with his lyrics, they're super clever and are pretty hilarious at times

:rip: Casey Anthony

The last part of this song makes me wet tbh

Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor aka Lorde

:gaycat: :gaycat: :gaycat:

She gave us these masterpieces just this year..

The first two verses and pre-chorus of The Louvre:
"[Verse 1]
Well, summer slipped us underneath her tongue
Our days and nights are perfumed with obsession
Half of my wardrobe is on your bedroom floor
Use our eyes, throw our hands overboard

[Verse 2]
I am your sweetheart psychopathic crush
Drink up your movements, still I can't get enough
I overthink your punctuation use
Not my fault, just a thing that my mind do

A rush at the beginning
I get caught up, just for a minute
But lover, you're the one to blame
All that you’re doing
Can you hear the violence?
Megaphone to my chest
Broadcast the boom, boom, boom, boom
And make 'em all dance to it"

This is my favourite verse in Hard Feelings:
"I light all the candles
Cut flowers for all my rooms
I care for myself the way I used to care about you
These days, we kiss and we keep busy
The waves come after midnight
I call from underwater
Why even try to get right?
When you’ve outgrown a lover
The whole world knows but you
It’s time to let go of this endless summer afternoon"

The way she writes just feels so poetic and soul bearing. Hence she's my favourite lyricist out there.
