12 December, 2017:
The United States’ current 50 star flag was designed as a school project by 17 year-old Robert G. Heft. Heft received a B- for his efforts, but his teacher said he would reconsider the grade if Congress accepted Heft’s ostensibly mediocre design. In 1959, that’s precisely what happened, and Heft’s design was selected to be the latest iteration of the American flag. His teacher promptly changed the grade to an A.

December 17, 2017:
Henry Clay, leader of the Whig party and five times an unsuccessful presidential candidate, was Speaker of the House of Representatives longer than anyone else in the nineteenth century, and the most influential member of the Senate during its golden age.
Through it all he displayed remarkable consistency of purpose: he was a nationalist, devoted to the economic development and political integration of the United States.
As Speaker of the House in 1812, Clay was one of the ‘War Hawks,’ men who believed that war with Great Britain was necessary to preserve the overseas markets of American staple producers. But Clay also served as a negotiator at the Ghent peace conference, and for the rest of his life pursued conciliation at home and abroad. Although a slaveholder, Clay disapproved of slavery as a system. Clay advocated gradual emancipation and the resettlement of the freed people in Africa. He also defended, unsuccessfully, the right of the so-called Five Civilized Tribes of Indians to their lands, and he warned that annexation of Texas would provoke war with Mexico and exacerbate tensions between North and South.

Bonus fact:
One of the ships that recived the Titanic's distress call was its sister ship, the RMS Olympic. Even though Olympic was 500 nauticle miles away (930 km/580 mi) and on her way to Southampton, Captain Herbert James Haddock turned around and ran the ship at full speed towards Titanic's last known location.
However when Olympic was 100 nauticle miles away, she recieved a message from Captain Rostron of Cunard's RMS Carpathia, which had arrived at the scene. Rostron explained that Olympic continuing on course to Titanic would gain nothing, as "All boats accounted for. About 675 souls saved [...] Titanic foundered about 2:20 am."

When Olympic offered to take on the survivors, she was heatedly turned down by Captain Rostron of Carpathia, who was concerned that it would cause panic amongst the survivors of the disaster to see a virtual mirror-image of Titanic appear and ask them to board.

If you're going through hell, keep going.

Goodbye is not etymologically related to the word good. It's a contraction of God be with ye. However, godbwye, as it became, separating into good and bye, is likely influenced at least in part by how we say good day, good morning, etc.

References to god in parting phrases is not uncommon, actually. In fact, adieu in French comes from expressions shortened to "to god," as does the Spanish adios.

As far as words merging into other words, that's not uncommon either. The german word for squirrel, eichhorn, at face value literally means "oak horn." in reality,

"folk etymology based on Eiche and Horn, but actually from Old High German eihhorno, from Proto-Germanic *aikwernô, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *aig- (“move quickly”), cognate with Old English acol (“frightened”), and Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“squirrel”)."

Let's ignore the fact that I didn't post yesterday

I'll post a few facts today, totally not because there was a lack yesterday.

Christmas 2017:

1. Telling ghost stories used to be a Christmas Eve tradition.

2. The total number of gifts listened in the song 12 Days of Christmas amounts to 364—nearly one gift for every day of the year.

3. A radio host, wanting to get people in the holiday spirit, once barricaded himself in a studio and played Wham!'s Last Christmas 24 times.

4. A Charlie Brown Christmas caused the death of aluminum Christmas trees. This happened because Charlie chose a real tree over an aluminum tree, as Lucy suggested.
